Business School Profile: UCLA Anderson
At UCLA Anderson you will find an intimate MBA program atmosphere that thrives as part of the larger University of California Los Angeles. But you won’t find a major on your transcript upon graduation because that distinction does not exist here. Instead, students typically identify their area of focus to future employers by highlighting their electives track – more on that in a moment.
This MBA program embodies an entrepreneurial spirit and a global orientation. Individual work and team-based projects, supported by interaction with the larger business community, draws students from around the world to this MBA program every year. The MBA Student Voice blogs are a popular way that our clients tap into the student experience. Equally fascinating is the MBA Insider blog, frequented by current and prospective students and rich with the knowledge and experience of the program’s Admissions Committee members.
Teamwork is central to the UCLA Anderson program and profs here use team-building exercises, simulations, cases, and conceptual models in preparing MBA students to become highly effective team members and leaders. The MBA faculty collaborates, too, creating experiences that enable students to develop and integrate the knowledge and skills needed to resolve strategic issues and lead complex organizations. The piece de resistance of this area of study is the 6-month original Applied Management Research Project.
“Leadership Foundations” is a five-day immersion that introduces the Anderson MBA curriculum and creates bonds between classmates (assigned to “sections” of some 70 students). Then begins the rigorous Management Core, ten courses that address the major disciplines and functional areas of business. Advanced Electives round out the curriculum and enable students to customize the curriculum to meet individual interests and goals.
Six academic centers – economics, entertainment, finance, real estate, entrepreneurship, and international business – support faculty research and sponsor courses, extracurricular activities and conferences, providing an opportunity to apply this knowledge through interactive programs for students, alumni and the community. We liken UCLA to the breadth of Michigan, the cohesiveness of Kellogg, and the big-city allure of NYU Stern.
Away from the classroom, opportunities for involvement abound – from the governing Anderson Student Association (ASA) to dozens of professional, affinity, and special-interest clubs. Central to student life at Anderson is its embrace of diversity.
Los Angeles in particular, and Southern California in general, is an exciting region of the world – especially for MBA students. Diversity is central to this area and our clients find this diversity a strength as they expand their horizons at UCLA Anderson. The massive but architecturally engaging UCLA campus is arguably the friendliest setting you could imagine. Must be all that year-round sunshine and casual lifestyle! And the adjacent village of Westwood has all of the creature comforts a busy b-schooler could ever want.
